The M16A1 has only been spotted on the front of the official French Xbox 360 magazine and not in actual ingame footage from the GameTrailers. However, it does make sense for the rifle to make it into Black Ops, knowing over 100,000 of them were adopted by the US Army and Air Force by 1963. The original design was based on the 7.62mm AR-10 developed by Eugene Stoner. The US Army required a more lightweight alternative to the heavy AR-10, which resulted in the development of the Armalite-15, or AR-15. Within three years, Colt Manufacturing Company started mass producing the (experimental) XM16E1. Unfortunately, the rifle didn’t live up to its promising design, and performed poorly under the harsh conditions troops encountered in Vietnam. Numerous changes were made to its design to counter the problems with weapon jammings and by 1967, the XM16E1 became a standard issue US rifle, and was now designated as the M16A1.

The Steyr AUG is a common sight in media, due to its distinctive bullpup design. It appears in both the Black Ops campaign and online multiplayer. In single player, its appearance is an anachronism: the mission in which it appears is before the prototype design for the AUG ever existed. Regardless, the AUG possesses a high rate of fire and relatively low recoil. It can be used with virtually any of the sights available in the game, but it boasts a unique ACOG Scope, which appears to be the typical AUG sight. The AUG is similar to the FAMAS, but is unlocked later in the game. It does not appear in the campaign frequently, and is a default loadout only once.

Unlocked at Level 38, the AK-47 is the third-to-last assault rifle, being followed up by the CAR-15 Commando and the classified G11. The AK-47 boasts a high rate of fire, and good damage. It is a good all-round rifle, appearing in both the Campaign and Multiplayer components of Black Ops. It is capable of being used with a large number of different attachments, though the standard iron sight is generally acceptable. The AK-47 uses the GP20 grenade launcher, though it is not overwhelmingly common in multiplayer due to its relatively high unlock level. Some players choose to replace the AK-47 with the CAR-15 Commando, or the G11, when they reach Rank 44, due to the lower recoil and improved accuracy.

The attempts at identifying this AR-15 variant are numerous. Some have stated this assault rifle simply is a misplaced M4 Carbine, some have stated this is an XM177 CAR-15 and some have stated this is a Colt Model 629. As a matter of fact, all of these speculations are incorrect. Why? The simple fact is this CAR-15 variant does not exist, and was probably made up by Treyarch to illustrate the experimental stages many of the weapons were in at the times in which Black Ops takes place. All CAR-15 rifles, predecessors to the M4 family of firearms, featured carry handles on top of them, and this pretty much rules out all possible rifles up until the M4 Carbine and M16A3, which did feature flat-top receivers, but would not be seen until the 1980s. However, the entire lower receiver, the 10 inch barrel and the muzzle brake are all based on the XM-177E1 Commando, which is why we identify it as such. The Colt Automatic Rifle-15 was developed in the 1960s as a compact alternative to the existing AR-15 rifles, and was often classified as an SMG because of the short barrel. In 1967, the rifle had undergone several changes and its barrel was lengthened to 11.5 inches, which resulted in the XM-177E2. The XM-177 Commando rifles never got past their experimental designations, and eventually would cease to be produced in favor of a shortened Carbine version of the M16A1, the Colt Model 653.

In 1979, a shortened carbine variant of the AKS-74 was adopted into service with the Soviet Army: the AKS-74U, which in terms of tactical deployment, bridges the gap between a sub machine gun and an assault rifle. In Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, it was named AK-74u and had many similarities to assault rifles with the sway, mobility and penetration of the assault rifle, but with the moving and ADS speed of sub machine guns. The 'u' designation at the end of the weapon name effectively means 'укороченный' - Russian for 'shortened', and pronounced as 'Ukorochenniy'.

Prototype: Unknown
Production: 1972
Country of origin: Germany
Caliber: 7.62x51mm NATO
Fire modes: Semi-automatic
Rate of fire: N/A
Range: 800 meters

Real World Information

The PSG-1 is a sniper rifle manufactured by the German Heckler & Koch firearms company. The PSG-1 was employed by the German police ('polizei') and military, and is regarded as one of the most accurate semi-automatic sniper rifles in the world. PSG is merely an abbreviation for the full name of the rifle: the Präzisionsschützengewehr (Precision Marksman Rifle), and with a name like that, you know the rifle means business. Supposedly, the PSG-1 was created in the aftermath of the 1972 Summer Olympics, held in Munich. During the event, a terrorist group was responsible for the killings of several athletes. The PSG-1 was one of the designs intended to ensure history did not repeat itself. PSG-1 rifles do not have iron sights, and when purchased, come with a scope mounted.  According to tests performed by the United States military during the 1980s, the PSG-1 was claimed to be less accurate than both the M21 and M40 sniper rifles: both of these rifles are operated by the US military, so these results have always been disputed.

In-Game Information

COD Points2000

The PSG-1 is the final sniper rifle that can be acquired, unlocking after the player purchases both the Walther WA2000, and the L96A1. The earliest level that the PSG-1 can be purchased at is Rank 27, assuming the player has a sufficient amount of CoD Points to purchase the L96 as well. By standard, the PSG-1 in-game feeds from a five round magazine; with Extended Mags attached, the magazine capacity is doubled to 10. The recoil experienced by the PSG-1 is extremely predictable, jumping consistently up to the right; similarly to Modern Warfare 2's Barrett .50 Cal. It also re-centers faster than the L96, meaning that it can prove more effective in combat.

The model that appears in-game is confirmed to be the PSG-1. Previously, the model was not confirmed, as it could have been the MSG-90 model, which is equipped with a standard G3 barrel as opposed to the PSG-1 barrel. The scope on the PSG-1 uses a thicker reticule, which is relatively similar to that of the L96 and WA2000.

The CZ 75 is a semi-automatic pistol designed and produced in the Czech Republic. It's name is obviously taken from the company's name (CZ) and the year the weapon was designed ('75). In 1992 a selective-fire variant was introduced with a longer barrel to compensate. Oddly enough, the full-auto version of the CZ 75 is also included in the singleplayer campaign.

The regular semi-automatic version and the DAO (Full Auto) are both seen in the singleplayer campaign as well as multiplayer.

CZ75 Full Auto in Black Ops

Treyarch Developer

The CZ75 DAO (Full Auto) is an upgrade. It's the one, and only, side arm that has this upgrade. The CZ75 is the classified handgun so you are going to have to buy every other handgun to get it, plus you are going to have to buy the upgrade.

Before everyone panics, as you are apt to do, it kicks like a mofo and isn't very accurate. In our beta data where we plot Kills Per Minute averages across every weapon, it doesn't register as a kill leader.

As you probably know, we went with slightly more traditional system of having handguns be secondaries and shotguns and machine pistols be primaries. However, and we know this as a fact, handguns are not used that often versus primaries. Thus, we have a few unique attachments for the high-end handguns we give the specialist players who understand that switching to a secondary is often faster than reloading when out of ammo.

Information

COD PointsClassified

The Stoner 63, also known as the XM22/E1, is designed by Eugene Stoner and was taken into production in 1963, hence the name. By simply changing out some of the key components, this modular weapons system made it easy to transform the Stoner 63 into a rifle, carbine or a light machine gun. It was used in very limited numbers in Vietnam by members of the United States Navy SEALs and served only a short life of 9 years of being in production.

The first working prototype was chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and completed in 1962. It was designated the Stoner M69W (for no other reason than when turned upside down it reads the same, symbolizing Stoner's vision of a fully invertible receiver). A second prototype called the Stoner 62 was fabricated before the team decided to focus on the promising new 5.56x45mm small caliber high-velocity cartridge, as it appeared the new round was gaining mainstream military approval. At that time the weapon became known as the Stoner 63.

While the SPAS-12 is a semi-automatic shotgun at heart, it can be used as a pump-action, should the shooter decide to. The main reasoning for this was to allow the SPAS-12 to fire lower-powered rounds. During the Reveal Trailer, the SPAS-12 is seen twice: at 1:16, and 1:20. During the trailer, a shotgun round known as the "Dragon's Breath" is shown. This round is incendiary, and screenshots of the image are available below.
